Jaka Lakovic's statement:

“Hello all! I am writing this letter to explain that, after Deep reflection, the time has come to end this marvelous chapter of my life, which has given me practically everything.

Basketball has and will continue to be an important part of my life, but not as a professional player from no won. On this journey, I have met many exceptional people and made strong friendships which will remain forever.

I feel extremely privileged. I have had the honour to play for great clubs and collectives, with whom I have identified the most and I have always shown to be equally committed, loyal and proud of the colours that I have defended.

I would therefore like to thank all of those clubs, starting with my first, Slovan Ljubljana, and then Krka Novo Mesto, Panathinaikos, FC Barcelona, Galatasaray, Avellino, Gaziantep and also the Slovenian national team, for whom I have always played with all my heart and soul.

I also want to thank all my teammates, coaches and staff of these clubs who have been at my side during this journey. Without you, I would not be the personal nor the player I am today. Of course, I do not want to forget you, my loyal fans and followers. You have supported and cheered me on in the most difficult times. Thank you! I will miss you.

The time has come to now share and transfer my knowledge and experience to the coming generation, who will continue winning for all of us. We are rarely conscious of the fact that we are all one big team that needs a lot of good spirit, cohesion and joy to play.

All of what I have achieved, of course, would not have been possible without my family. They have supported me unconditionally. I am conscious of the sacrifice and help they have given me, fundamental to reap the rewards that I have had as a professional basketball player. For me, at times, they have had to live with the dark side of professionalism and feel it in their own skin. Helena, dear, I cannot find words that can show the gratitude I feel.

All of this fills me with pride and I will carry it with me in this new chapter in my life. Thank you again for all of those who accompanied me and supported me in these fantastic and wonderful 20 years in my career as a professional basketball player.

See you on the court.

Jaka Lakovic”
