Chad replace South Africa in FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 African Qualifiers

Official statement from FIBA

World Cup
FIBA's Executive Committee on Friday selected Chad to replace South Africa in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 African Qualifiers.

This comes after Basketball South Africa confirmed the withdrawal of its senior men's national team from the qualifying campaign for FIBA's flagship event taking place in China from August 31-September 15, 2019.

All 16 teams that qualified and competed at FIBA AfroBasket 2017 automatically earned their places in the African Qualifiers for the World Cup.

South Africa's withdrawal meant that FIBA's Regional Office in Africa chose the next best team - Chad - as their replacement. Chad just missed out on qualifying for the AfroBasket after losing 67-64 against Central African Republic (CAF) to finish second in a three-team Additional Qualifiers Group J. The win for CAF saw them clinch the final spot on offer for Africa's top competition.

Chad take South Africa's place in Group A of the African Qualifiers, where they join Cameroon, Guinea and continental champions Tunisia. The action gets underway in the Cameroonian capital of Yaounde later this month (November 24-26).
