Wright State promoted longtime assistant Billy Donlon to head coach on Wednesday, one day after losing Brad Brownell to Clemson.
Donlon has spent the past four years as Brownell’s associate head coach, along with four years as his assistant at UNC-Wilmington, where he played his college basketball.
Brownell was introduced at Clemson on Tuesday, where he took over for Oliver Purnell.
“Coach Donlon brings not only an ability to continue what has been laid in place but also a wealth of basketball knowledge and expertise to his new position,” Wright State athletic director Bob Grant said. “We are confident that Billy will continue building our program and take Raider basketball to another level of success.”
The 33-year-old Chicago-area native played professionally in France, Germany and Ireland before becoming a coach. He takes over a program at Wright State that has won at least 20 games each of the last four seasons, including a trip to the NCAA tournament in 2007.
The Raiders went 84-45 during his four seasons on the bench, with a Horizon League mark of 49-21—the school’s best over a four-year span.
“I can’t wait to get started,” Donlon
