Tyler Geving replaces Ken Bone as Portland St coach

Portland State has promoted Tyler Geving to replace Ken Bone as mens basketball coach.

The 35-year-old Geving spent the past four seasons as an assistant under Bone.

Bone left to become Washington State coach last week.

The past two seasons have been the most successful in Portland State history. The Vikings posted consecutive 23-10 seasons and making their first two appearances in the NCAA tournament.

"I am very excited for this opportunity", Geving said Monday. "We have a great team coming back and I want to keep this program going in the same direction we have been. I want to maintain the continuity and make this program better than it is right now".

Portland State returns three starters and sixth-man Dominic Waters, who was a second team All-Big Sky Conference selection.

Geving has been the Vikings recruiting coordinator.

He is the 12th head coach in school history, the fifth since basketball returned before the 1996-97 season.

Geving began his coaching career as an assistant at Central Washington in 1994. He has never been a head coach.

"It was important that we not make the easy choice, but that we make the right choice", athletic director Torre Chisholm said. "And Tyler Geving is the right choice for this program. He takes this position with the support of the players, the boosters and the administration".
