Takal Molson enters NBA Draft, won't hire an agent
Canisius freshman guard Takal Molson announced Thursday that he will submit his name for the upcoming 2018 NBA Draft, but added that he will not hire an agent.
Canisius freshman guard Takal Molson announced Thursday that he will submit his name for the upcoming 2018 NBA Draft, but added that he will not hire an agent.
"Takal came in and showed that he can play at a high-level from opening day, and I think he has earned this chance to see how this process can help him grow," Canisius head coach Reggie Witherspoon said. "It is my desire that this process will be beneficial for him as he continues to grow as a person and as a basketball player."
"My family and I have spoken with coach Witherspoon and the staff at Canisius, and I feel that declaring for the NBA Draft will allow me to see where I stand as a basketball player," Molson said. "I am thankful for my experiences at Canisius to this point in my career, and because of that, I have elected to not hire an agent."
The NCAA allows student-athletes to declare for the draft in order to participate in pre-draft workouts and receive feedback from NBA teams. Molson will retain his three seasons of collegiate eligibility as long as he does not sign with an agent and removes his name from draft consideration within 10 days after the end of the NBA Draft Combine. That deadline this year is May 30.
The 2018 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year, Molson averaged 12.6 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game in his first season in a Canisius uniform. His 12.6 points per game scoring average ranked third on Canisius' 2017-18 roster, and it ranked second among all freshmen in the MAAC. His 417 total points stand as the most for a Canisius freshman since 1981-82, and his 25-point performance in the 2017-18 season opener at Buffalo Nov. 11 set the program's record for points by a true freshman in his collegiate debut. A four-time MAAC Rookie of the Week honoree, and a member of 2017-18 MAAC All-Rookie Team, Molson scored in double-figures 19 times and hit multiple 3-point field goals in 13 different contests. The Buffalo native played in, and started, all 33 games for Canisius last season.
Molson is the second Golden Griffin to declare for the NBA Draft this week, joining teammate Isaiah Reese.
Molson played a key role in helping Canisius post a 21-12 overall record and a 15-3 mark in MAAC play last season. The 21 wins tied the school record for victories in a regular season, and the 15 conference wins gave the Griffs a share of the MAAC regular-season championship, the program's first since 1993-94.
