NCAA UNDERGROUND: take note for your team in Europe...Skylar Spencer - SAN DIEGO STATE
A helicopter in the paint. Never missed a single game in four season at SDSU…
WHERE HE PLAYS – 6-10 Center. Impressive presence inside the paint.
PHYSICAL SKILLS – Great athlete; long and strong body; (very long) wingspan you have to deal with; explosive off the ground. Defensive nightmare for everyone trying to attack the rim…
WHERE HE RECEIVES THE BALL AND HOW HE FINISHES – Spencer is at his best around the basket - getting offensive rebounds/putbacks; or assists from teammates and finishing quick and strong without putting the ball on the floor. He is a great athlete and moves well and plays well off of other people – follows the game pretty well – can jump 2 or 3 times in a row to secure the ball or score the basket. Spencer is very good offensive rebounder (this is one of his main strengths) – uses his long arms and leaping ability in order to get putbacks and second chance pts; he is always present on the offensive glass looking to keep the ball alive. Around the basket he tries to dunk everything when he has a chance. Extreme explosiveness off the ground. Good screener.
Weaknesses: free throws; doesn’t have great touch, has to develop more moves in his low post game;
WHERE AND HOW HE DEFEND – this is his main strength! He is a great defender and has huge influence on the game on defensive end. Great rim protector who uses his length and athleticism to its full advantage – great shot blocker; has ability to move his feet and keep his man in front; great defensive energy; in the low post he moves his feet well and uses his length in order to change opponents shots; good help side defender who looks to block shots. Can leave the paint and keep players (even guards) in front of him for 1-2 dribbles. Perfect for switching on defense.
HOW HE PLAYS PICK AND ROLL – offense & defense – In ball screen situations he rolls to the basket every time looking to catch the ball around the basket and finish right away without putting the ball on the floor. Can catch lob passes, follows the flow of the game pretty well. Defensively he usually stays in drop position and protects the paint; has ability to show on ball screens with effectiveness.
RIGHT FIT FOR HIM – team looking for a strong, long and vertical presence in the middle. Someone who can catch rebounds in bunches, score on alley oops and do a great job defensively.
