NCAA UNDERGROUND: take note for your team in Europe... Trey Freeman - OLD DOMINION

Backcourt scorer. You will see him in Portsmouth next week...

NCAA

WHERE HE PLAYS – PG/Combo guard 6-2feet tall. Prefers to have ball in his hands and because of his size, PG position suits him the best, however he can easily play off the ball with one more PG.

PHYSICAL SKILLS – Average athlete; decent speed, not great leaping ability in traffic, average body frame for PG.

WHERE HE RECEIVES THE BALL AND HOW HE FINISHES – Freeman is a scoring PG with really good pull up jumper. He is good at shooting the ball off the dribble, especially off his left hand – this is his specialty. Freeman has good handles and decent speed, he prefers attacking and hitting mid range pull up jumper (off 1-2 dribbles). Moreover, he is good perimeter shooter, mostly from spot up/catch and shoot situations. Freeman is shooting great percentage outside the 3pt line and shouldn’t be left alone. He has good shot selection and will not force shots from the perimeter, moreover he plays under control. Ability to set his feet quickly provides him the opportunity to be a good shooter coming off screens (mainly mid range shots, when using staggers, pin downs, flair screens). In 1 on 1, or ISO situations, Freeman will try to put the ball on the floor and attack, trying to create space in order to get his shot off. Even though he is right handed, he is stronger going to his left hand and attacking to his left side. WEAKNESSES: ability to attack off the dribble, get in the paint and create for others – this is something he misses in his offensive repertoire and has to get much better at in order to be more effective as a pg. Most of his scoring opportunities are from pull up jumpers, shots coming off screens or spot up situations, and being more aggressive off the dribble, getting in the paint and creating for himself and his teammate is segment he has to get better at. Also he is not great athlete, and his ability to finish around the basket is not really good.

WHERE AND HOW HE DEFEND – good on ball defender – can defend positions 1 and 2 – uses his speed to keep his man in front; decent lateral speed; wants to play defense and understand defensive concepts both on and off the ball.

HOW HE PLAYS PICK AND ROLL – offense & defense – in ball screen situations he looks to come off the pick and pull up off the dribble. This is his first look. He is not natural PG in ball screen situations, doesn’t have great court vision and simply doesn’t have PG instinct when using the pick. If defense is late on showing on the pick he can hurt them, because he can shoot the ball and has good handles to attack defenders, however his passing and ability to create for others is not his strength.

RIGHT FIT FOR HIM – team with more set offense and team where he can be paired with one more PG, so he can play as combo guard who has the opportunity to score rather than create for others. He likes using staggers, or pin downs, flair screens, and in ball screens he looks to score first.
