NCAA UNDERGROUND: take note for your team in Europe... Majok Deng - UL Monroe
From Sudan, plays big and shoot from outside…
WHERE HE PLAYS – 4 (for Europe) at 6-10 for slightly more than 180 pounds; in college he plays as a 3 man sometimes; but at the next level he should be 4 man who will spread the floor
PHYSICAL SKILLS – very long, good mobility for someone his size, good speed; average leaping ability, lacks physical strength (upper and lower body)
WHERE HE RECEIVES THE BALL AND HOW HE FINISHES – Deng likes to play out on perimeter and spread the floor. His offensive strength is his perimeter shot – Deng can really shoot the ball from behind the arc; has high release and has ability to set up his feet quickly. He is very long and has ability to put the ball on the floor and attack opposing Forwards from perimeter. Deng has decent mid range pull up and uses his mobility to his advantage to attack from the outside. As said, his strength is his outside shot (catch and shoot situations, and he is capable shooter coming off pin downs). Because of his size he is capable of posting up smaller players – in the low post he prefers to face up, or shoot turn around jumpers.
WEAKNESSES: physical strength (especially for the next level); ability to finish through contact; lack of strength shows in both areas – ability to finish through contract and also to penetrate all the way to the basket; with this being said he would have to play as a 4 man at the next level using his perimeter shot to spread the floor; his ability to play in the low post with his back to the basket is not his strength [not good back to the basket moves, prefers face up/turnaround Jumpers]; would have problems posting up stronger PF, but also not strong enough to simple take them all the way to the hoop when attacking from outside.
WHERE AND HOW HE DEFEND – has to guard PF position; uses length to his advantage (challenging shots); has to improve footwork and lateral movement when guarding PF out on perimeter; in the low post lack of strength can be big disadvantage when playing vs stronger players; decent rebounder on the defensive end.
HOW HE PLAYS PICK AND ROLL – offense & defense – pick and pop, looking for perimeter jumper, or roll to the mid post, looking for post up (and then face up); defensively, usually stays in drop position; switching would not be a great option since he would struggle to keep faster guards in front.
RIGHT FIT FOR HIM – fast pace team where he can spread the floor and look to attack from perimeter.
