NCAA UNDERGROUND: take note for your team in Europe... Nick Faust - LONG BEACH STATE
In few years from being just a “dunking machine” to complete offensive player shooting over 40% from threes…
WHERE HE PLAYS – wing player – 2-3, depends of the system, because of his size, defensive capability and ability to handle the ball can play in either position.
PHYSICAL SKILLS – 6-5, 200 pounds. very athletic wing player. Very long, with great speed and explosiveness.
WHERE HE RECEIVES THE BALL AND HOW HE FINISHES – transfer from Maryland improved a lot in terms of his offensive versatility and ability to score the ball. His shooting is probably the biggest improvement. Faust is shooting the ball from behind the arc really well this season – very dangerous in catch and shoot situation, since he has quick release and will shooting from anywhere on the floor if he has any separation from his defender. Moreover, Faust has decent 1-2 dribble pull up (improved in this segment). Off the bounce, he can create in traffic and finishing around the rim, however this is not his strength and can additionally improve. Faust wants to attack every time he touches the ball, passing is not his first option. He has decent handles and can push the ball in transition.
NEGATIVES: recognizing situations on the floor; finishing with his left hand; shot selection; and with his size should be able to post up defenders, which would bring additional versatility to his offensive game; has to be more present on offensive glass – considering his size and athleticism he should be better and more aggressive offensive rebounder.
WHERE AND HOW HE DEFEND – has skills to be really good on ball defender – can guard multiple positions, Faust has really good length which he uses well. Also he has decent lateral speed and athleticism in order to defend perimeter players off the dribble (can still improve on sliding his feet and focus on keeping his man in front, since he likes to gamble a lot, reach with hands trying to get steals off the dribble). Can improve off ball defense since he likes to gamble off the ball, and shoot gaps in order to get steals, while losing the track of his own man.
HOW HE PLAYS PICK AND ROLL – offense & defense – can play in ball screens. Faust has decent handles and can be used in ball screen situations. He is not great passer, and with this being said, he will make obvious passes if someone is open, but passing is not his strength. Coming out of ball screens, scoring is his first option.
RIGHT FIT FOR HIM – faster league/team, where he can play up and down the court, and where he will have freedom in his first 1-2 seasons. Faust needs basketball in his hands in order to be productive, he is not type of player who can be on the court and patiently just wait for shoots to come to him.
