NCAA UNDERGROUND: take note for your team in Europe... Ron Curry - James Madison U.

He’s not your old-style unselfish point guard… he’s definitely much more

NCAA

WHERE HE PLAYS – PG/combo guard; he is the most productive as a PG, but if necessary can play off the ball in some situations.

PHYSICAL SKILLS – Good size PG, with good height for this position. Decent/average athlete (not overly quick and explosive, but definitely fast enough to use speed to his advantage when needed). Good athletic built and body frame.

WHERE HE RECEIVES THE BALL AND HOW HE FINISHES – Curry is scoring PG who is always under control. As mentioned above, he is not jet quick player, however he uses his dribble in order to keep defenders off balance and to create space between him and defender in order to release his shot. Curry likes being in ball screen situations a lot and his offensive asset is his outside jumper. He is very good jumpshooter who shoots the ball well off the dribble as well as from catch and shoot situations. He is always under control and doesn’t force anything offensively. He has good mid range jumper and can create his own shot either coming off ball screens or from ISO situations. Curry is capable of penetrating defense and getting the ball all the way to the rim, however this is not his strength and should use this more often in his game. He is solid guard who takes care of the ball. Negatives: Curry is not overly creative off the dribble in terms of involving his teammates – he will make obvious passes but he is not type of PG who will create for everybody else on the floor after beating his defender. He should be more aggressive off the dribble, trying to get in the paint and find open teammates.

WHERE AND HOW HE DEFEND – Doesn’t play defense to his full potential. Has to be much more aggressive and active on ball defender. Curry gets stuck on screens to easy (especially on ball screens), and has to get much better at getting through screens. Even though he has average speed, he doesn’t use it defensively. Competition he faces in college is not at the highest level possible, and with this being said, for playing basketball at pro level he has to significantly improve his on-ball defense.

HOW HE PLAYS PICK AND ROLL – offense & defense – Uses ball screens constantly and this is his strength. Every time defense is late in showing on ball screens, or if his defender tries to go under the pick, Curry will shoot the ball effectively. He has good pull up jumper and will shoot every time if defense doesn’t pay attention. His first option coming off ball screens is to score by using his jumper. Not overly creative coming out of ball screens in terms of involving his teammates (average floor vision) and will make obvious passes. Curry uses ball screens primarily to score. Defensively he has to be much better at getting through ball screens

RIGHT FIT FOR HIM – slow pace team with extensive use of ball screens
