Forward Joey van Zegeren leaves Virginia Tech basketball team
The Dutch forward will remain enrolled at the school
Virginia Tech head coach Buzz Williams has announced that forward Joey van Zegeren will leave the basketball team. He will remain enrolled at the university and stay on scholarship until May, when he is slated to graduate.
“Joey and I met several times over the past week. Today, we decided that it would be best if he leaves the team to focus on completing his degree and focus on his development as he looks toward the next phase of his basketball career,” said Williams. “He is good young man who continues to grow as a person and a player. I will be proud of him when he walks across the stage in May as a Virginia Tech graduate.”
The 6-foot-10 junior from the Netherlands had been the leading rebounder on the Hokies this season, averaging 5.3 per game in addition to his 9.8 points. According to the release, van Zegeren will either look to turn professional or seek a transfer.
Van Zegeren was suspended from the team for the past four games because of an incident that occurred in practice.
