A century of the NBA: the impact of Internationals from 2000 to today
How the NBA has changed in these 18 years, from 6.4% of minutes in 2000 to the actual 24.1% for non-American players
Is the NBA future of the International players? Probably not, but certainly something has changed in recent seasons, with the use of non-American players in constant growth in recent years.
In particular in this XXI century we have gone from 25 foreigners in 2000 to the current 116 players, with a decidedly different impact on NBA courts:
1999-2000: 6,4% minutes, 6.5% points, 8.4% rebounds & 4.7% di assists
2017-2018: 24,1% of minutes and points, 27,9% rebounds & 23,5% di assists
In fact, an increase of almost 300% on the use of International players*. The chart is quite clear, net growth up to 2005/06, a stable situation until 2013 where the numbers are once again growing actively, with at least 100 foreigners in the last 5 years.
Here the detail year by year:
That these numbers are destined to rise further in the coming years? Or have we already reached the maximum peak in today's NBA, where we have non-US players on the field for 1/4 of the time? Surely someone like Luka Doncic can give a further boost to his 'teammates' from next season, just to cite any example...
*International players are considered by passport (NBA lists on official site), an example among these is also considered Irving (Australian).
