Source: Josh Gray likely to return to G League, drawing interest from NBA teams
He holds two offers overseas but he will likely pursue an NBA opportunity by playing in the G League
Free-agent point guard Josh Gray is likely to return to the NBA G League next season to pursue an NBA call-up, a source told Sportando.
Gray, a 6-foot-1 player out of Louisiana State, has hired agent Jason Elam for representation and has been drawing interest from some NBA teams in terms of a call-up, Sportando has learned.
Gray had a very good rookie season in the NBA G League after making the Northern Arizona Suns roster via open tryout. He stood out as one of the most underrated and intriguing point guards in the league last season. Gray showed he could make a great impact for the Suns coming off the bench. He used his explosiveness to attack the rim but he was also able to pull up shots off the pick-and-rolls and create for his teammates.
In 50 NBA G League games, he averaged 13.4 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 4.6 assists in 25.3 minutes, which are converted to 21.7 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 7.3 assists per 40 minutes. Gray also recorded a triple-double 24 points, 13 rebounds, 11 assists and 5 steals against the Sioux Falls Skyforce as he was matched up with current Lakers training camp invitee Briante Weber, one of the toughest defenders in the G League last season.
After the 2016-17 NBA G League season, Gray was granted invite to attend the annual NBA G League Elite Mini-Camp in early May. At that event, he recorded the fifth-best max vertical at 38.5 inches and averaged 10.3 points and 5.3 assists in the scrimmage games.
He had the chance to play in the Orlando Summer League for the Magic. In 3 games, he averaged 7 points, 1.3 rebounds, and 3 assists in 15.7 minutes.
Gray has had some pretty high-level clubs from Greece and Turkey that showed interest in him. He currently holds two offers overseas but the plan now is that he will likely return to the NBA G League and pursue an NBA opportunity, per source.
The Northern Arizona Suns currently hold his NBA G League rights, but there are several other teams who are interested in trading for him, the source said.
