The Wollongong ahm Hawks have announced today that Head Coach Gordie McLeod has signed a multi-year agreement that will see the Illawarra sporting icon remain as the Head Coach of the club for the years to come.

The re-signing of the current National Basketball League Coach of the Year is a major coup for the NBL foundation club and is a testament to Gordie’s commitment to the region and to the development of not only the Wollongong Hawks but to basketball in the Illawarra.

“I made a commitment to this club, this region and the community when returning last season. Coming back to the Hawks under a community based model and seeing the support of our fans, members and sponsors over the past 12 months has been outstanding.” Head Coach Gordie McLeod said.

“I’m very pleased to be continuing a long term commitment to not only our Wollongong Hawks basketball program but to basketball in the Illawarra. We are a region rich in sporting talent and passion and i’m passionate about the development of our sport in this region.”

After almost completing what many said was the impossible last season, the Wollongong Hawks have re-signed eight out of the ten players who went all the way to the NBL Grand Finals series last year, have added forward Oscar Forman and have one last remaining import spot to fill the point guard position.

“As a club we pride ourselves on loyalty, commitment and working together as a team to achieve one goal. To have eight out of ten guys from an NBL Grand Final team stick together is fantastic. It’s a real testament to those guys and shows their commitment to our basketball program here in Wollongong and to our community.” McLeod said.

“We have no expectations leading into this season, we have one spot left to fill on our roster then we will come together to commence pre-season around late July. There’s nine teams now in the competition, the talent is spread out a little more and the season is slightly longer. It’s going to be an interesting season ahead and i’m looking forward to hitting the ground running with the team.” He concluded.
