Australia
Melbourne United today announced the signing of Mitch McCarron to the Club on a three-year contract.

United have lured the 2015 NCAA Division II National Player of the Year back from Europe after winning the title with Petrol Olimpija Ljubjana in Slovenia. His second Euro League Championship in as many years.

The young Boomer most recently had his best season in the NBL averaging 11.2 points, 6.7 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game to lead the way for the Cairns Taipans during the 2017-18 season.

Head Coach Dean Vickerman was excited to have secured the exciting guard.

“Mitch is one of the most versatile guards in the league who can play any of those three guard positions, so certainly his versatility is something that attracted us to him”.

“To be a top five offensive rebounder at 6’2 is quite an incredible category for him to be a leader in” Vickerman said.

“He’s become a very well rounded player. He’s a great defender and I think he’s really growing as a point-guard which we’ve seen in the off-season in Europe with him as well”.

“I think once we lost Tai Wesley you start thinking how can we replace local talent for local talent”

“Mitch was someone who was exploring the European market so it was a matter of putting in the call to say would he be interested in coming back to the NBL for an opportunity that can help him get to where he wants to get to with his international ambitions as well” said Vickerman.

A graduate of Metro University in Denver – the same college as fellow teammate David Barlow - McCarron was a standout during his time there averaging 20.2 points, 6 rebounds and 4.2 assists. In his final year he finished third in both scoring and free throws made in the schools history.

After winning the 2015 NCAA Division II National Player of the Year he then commenced his pro career in Europe where he won his first Championship with Palencia Baloncesto.

Following his short stint in Europe, the Alice Springs native began his NBL career with the Cairns Taipans, quickly making a name for himself as earned his Boomers call up and was the leading local vote-getter in the 2017-18 NBL MVP vote count.

“It’s going to be really interesting. I think on different nights he’ll have different assignments, and after talking to him he’s keen to have the ball in his hands as well and continue to get better at his pick-and-roll offence”.

“I think he understands his own improvement areas and they fit in pretty well with us” Vickerman shared.

McCarron joins United as their eighth signing for the 2018-19 season and is expected to arrive in Melbourne in early July.
