Bauermann Names Germany Training Squad And No Nowitzki

Ancora incertezza per Nowitzki e Kaman

National Teams

A host of players that have yet to play for Germany's senior team have been called up by coach Dirk Bauermann for a training camp that gets underway at the end of the month in Leverkusen.

Twenty-one players in all have been named, including a handful that competed at last year's Olympics, but not Dirk Nowitzki or Chris Kaman.

The two NBA players have yet to announce if they will play at the EuroBasket in Poland.

Steffen Hamann, Johannes Herber, Jan-Hendrik Jagla, Ademola Okulaja and Sven Schultze are players with a lot of national team experience who have been named, along with Tim Ohlbrecht and Konrad Wysocki - two members of the team that competed at last year's Olympics.

Okulaja has been plagued by injuries in recent times and is hoping to be fit enough to make the team.

"It needs to be clear that even with Dirk and/or Chris, it is going to be extremely difficult to be one of the best eight teams at the European Championship in Poland," Bauermann said.

Several Germany veterans have retired from the national team since the Beijing Games, including Patrick Femerling, Pascal Roller, Robert Garrett and Mithat Demirel. Demond Greene also announced last week that he was taking the summer off to spend time with his wife and children.

"The squad clearly shows the reorganization of the men's national team," Bauermann said.

"Eleven players never played in our first team.

"I also wanted to name Johannes Strasser from Telekom Baskets Bonn but Johannes has told me that he did not want to play due to personal reasons," Bauermann said.

The Germany training camp will be held from July 28 to August 6. Germany will then play friendly games against the Dutch national team and Israel in Leiden, the Netherlands, on August 7 and 8.
