Legabasket to add a "luxury tax" for clubs that want more than 5 foreigners?

The proposal will be analyzed by the next FIP General Assembly.

Serie A
Legabasket proposed to FIP (Italian Basketball Federation) a new project for next season.
FIP is pushing to reduce the number of foreigners in the Italian top division while the clubs would love to have more foreigners or no limits in signing foreigners.

At the moment there are two rules in Serie A:
3+4+5 and 5+5

With 3+4+5 clubs can have maximum 3 players from outside Europe (Americans), 4 Europeans/cotonou and 5 Italians with 8 visas per season (working visa is used also for European players not from EU countries).

With 5+5 clubs can have maximum 5 players from outside Europe (Americans) or European and 5 Italians (with 6 working visas).

With the new project proposed to FIP all the 16 Serie A clubs will have a 5+5 rule but if they want to add a 6th, 7th or 8th foreigner they can, paying a luxury tax.

€100.000 for the 6th foreigner
€120.000 for the 7h foreigner
€150.000 for the 8th foreigner

The money will be invested for the prizes for team that use more Italians (€850.000 was the budget shared between teams in 2016-2017) and to invest in youth sectors.

The proposal will be analyzed by the next FIP General Assembly.
