KR champions of Iceland 2009
La squadra di Jon Stefansson vince il titolo in Islanda
KR are the champions in Iceland 2009 after they beat Grindavik 84-83 at home in game 5. It was for sure a game to top the great show that those finals have been this year. Sold out and amazing admosphere and the game was as good as they get. KR leading from first minute but though they got 15 points lead the Grindavik team came back and it was 50-44 at half time. Jakob Sigurdarson (192-G-82, college: Birmingham Souther) came very aggressive to the first half, scoring more than last 4 games and was shooting the ball great. Jon Stefansson (195-G-82) also playing very good game but Pall Kristinsson (202-F-76, college: USC Upstate) very solid for Grindavik with 10 points at half time.
In second half KR was in foul trouble, Helgi Magnusson (198-G/F-82, college: Catawba), Fannar Olafsson (203-C-78, college: Indiana, PA) and Jason Dourisseau (196-G-83, college: Nebraska) all had 4 fouls with 4 minutes left of 3rd quarter and Grindavik came closer and closer. Score after 3rd quarter was 68-66. Jason Dourisseau opened the 4th quarter with a 3 point basket at the shotclock buzzer and KR had the lead in 5 to 7 points until the last few minutes. Dourisseau fouled out with about 4 minutes left and after Helgi Magnusson gave KR a 7 point lead with a big 3, Nicky Bradford (200-G/F-78, college: Kansas) went to the other end and cut the lead back to 4 points. Grindavik then cut the lead to one point and one minute left when KR took a timeout. After a good setup Helgi Magnusson got wide open 3 but missed, got his own rebound and KR went back out. They did not score in that last possession and Grindavik went for the last one with 20 sec left of game time. With a few good options outside the Grindavik team tried to get to the basket but without getting that last possibly winning shot and deflection in KR defense gave them the ball with 2 sec left and they kept the ball and celelbrated their second Icelandic championship in last three years.
A dramatic ending where Grindavik was a shot from taking that championship in away game after KR had the lead since first minute. Great game from two great basketball teams and one point win in game 5 tells you everything on how fantastic those finals where this year.
