Zalgiris Kaunas retires Arvydas Sabonis' No.11 jersey

Zalgiris Kaunas celebrated its 70th anniversary retiring the jersey of its basketball legend Arvydas Sabonis, and beating Panathinaikos Athens 76-51 in the semifinals of the Kaunas Akropolis Cup in its Zalgirio Arena on Saturday. Zalgiris led from start to finish, opening the game the game with triples from Paulius Jankunas and James Anderson for 13-2. Even though Panathinaikos got going through Esteban Batista, and cut within 3 points, the hosts went on a 14-2 run in the second quarter to open up 43-24 halftime lead. There was a lot of emotions during halftime, as the occasion was used for a special ceremony, which saw number 11 jersey of basketball great's Arvydas Sabonis raised to the rafters and retired forever at Zalgirio Arena. After the break, Zalgiris cruised to victory. Jankunas finished with 14 points, Vaidas Kariniauskas had 12, and Arturas Gudaitis 11 points. Batista amassed 20 points plus 18 boards for Panathinaikos. Real Madrid won the Spanish Supercup after downing its arch-rival FC Barcelona 99-78. Madrid led 29-14 after the first quarter, and never relinquished the advantage as Sergio Llull netted 21 points, and Ioannis Bourousis had 17 in victory. Ante Tomic scored 17 for Barcelona. In the German Supercup, ALBA Berlin downed FC Bayern Munich 76-68 on home floor with Jamel McLean scoring 15 points. Cedevita Zagreb beat city-rival Cibona 80-74 in Drazen Petrovic Cup, behind 22 points and 5 assists from Roko Ukic. In the tournament in Wroclaw, Poland, Dinamo Banco di Sardegna beat host team Slask Wroclaw 95-75 with Rakim Sanders netting 15 points, while PGE Turow Zgorzelec outgunned CSU Asesoft Ploiesti 96-92. Vlad Moldoveanu led in victory with 28 points.
