The Maccabi Bazan Haifa professional basketball team of the Israeli Basketball Super League announced today they have signed Israeli point guard Gal Mekel.
“Adding Gal Mekel to our roster and rotation will strengthen our teams ball handling, play making and defense,” said Maccabi Bazan Haifa head coach Brad Greenberg. “Adding Gal significantly improves our roster and I look forward to working with him. I am confident he will fit in well with Paul Stoll, Donta Smith and the rest of our team. Good organizations always look for ways to improve. Jeff Rosen knows this and it's great to work for an owner who is committed to making aggressive and positive moves to further invigorate the team.”“We are thrilled that Gal Mekel will join Maccabi Bazan Haifa,” said Maccabi Bazan Haifa owner Jeffrey Rosen. “Mekel is an elite point guard, who has proven himself to be a leader on and off the court, the fans of Maccabi Bazan Haifa should be excited.”
"I am very happy to join Maccabi Bazan Haifa," said Gal Mekel. "I felt a great connection to the team, and with my conversations with the coach and the management I could see that this club has great potential. I believe I can add another piece to the puzzle."
Mekel, 24, played in 22 games last season for Benetton Treviso in Italy’s top division, tallying 6.3 points and 3.7 assists per game. Prior to Italy, Mekel played three seasons for Gilboa Galil from 2008-2010, totaling 65 regular season games played, while holding averages of 9.1 points and 4.3 assists.
During the 2009-10 season, Mekel led Galil to their second Israeli league championship, defeating Maccabi Tel Aviv, while posting averages of 9.0 points and 3.0 assists in 5 playoff games. In Mekel’s three seasons with Galil, his team reached the Final Four three times, earning two Finals appearances, while winning the championship in 2009-10. He earned several awards during his time with Galil, including being named Israeli Newcomer of the Year (2008-09) and league MVP (2010-11).

The 6-foot-3 inch, 190-pound point guard played his collegiate ball in the United States for NCAA Division I Wichita State from 2006-08, signing with Maccabi Tel Aviv in March of 2008.
