Maccabi Haifa signs Gregory Vargas

The player returns to the Israeli team

The Maccabi Hunter Haifa professional basketball team of the Israeli Basketball Super League announced today they have signed point guard Gregory Vargas for the remainder of the 2016-17 season. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Gregory Vargas is a warrior, whose leadership, tenacity, and internal fortitude, we expect will positively impact the team,” said Maccabi Hunter Haifa team owner Jeff Rosen.

Vargas, 30, appeared in 8 games for SLUC Nancy Basket Pro in France’s top division while posting averages of 9.1 points, 3.3 rebounds and 5.5 assists in 31.6 minutes per game, before leaving the team for personal reasons.

Last season, Vargas played in 33 regular season games for the Greens and averaged 13.9 points, 4.6 rebounds and 6.4 assists (third in the league) in 34.7 minutes (third in the league) per game. He was awarded 2015-16 Israeli League Defensive Player of the Year, averaging 2.4 steals per game (third in the league) on the season. Vargas is expected to join the Greens on January 3, 2017.

The 13-year veteran, Vargas owns 6 Venezuelan league titles (4 with Marinos de Anzoategui) as well as one championship in Mexico’s top league with Halcones Rojos de Veracruz in 2012. As a member of Marinos de Anzoategui, Vargas won the 2012 championship alongside current Maccabi Hunter Haifa teammate Will Graves.

A prolific guard in Venezuela, Vargas owns career marks of 9.3 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.8 assists in 59 games in FIBA competitions since 2010. As a member of the Venezuelan national team, Vargas participated in the 2016 Olympics in Rio, tallying 7.6 points and 4.6 assists in 5 games. Vargas has also played professionally in Puerto Rico, Colombia, and the Dominican Republic.
