The FIBA Europe Board in Dubrovnik, 16-17 March, discussed a proposal by its Secretariat to study new models of competition for the EuroChallenge, in order to make the competition more attractive for clubs to participate in it.

FIBA Europe recognises that while playing in European competitions brings added value to the brand of any club, it can at the same time put a considerable financial constraint to its budget.

Any new direction will take into consideration all aspects of participating in a European competition, including geography, club budgets and other important criteria.

In recent years some of the clubs participating in the EuroChallenge have been among the top clubs in their domestic leagues, raising considerably the standard of the competition.

"We understand that in the current economic climate clubs have a lot of concerns that participating in European competitions can have a dramatic knock on effect on their budgets," commented FIBA Europe Secretary General Kamil Novak.

"At the same time clubs have the desire to play in Europe so it is our duty to find the perfect compromise, helping the sport while taking into consideration the needs of the clubs."
