Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Round 5 MVP: Nando De Colo, CSKA Moscow
De Colo is the MVP of the Round in EuroLeague
In a career full of outstanding performances, Nando De Colo outdid himself on Friday in guiding CSKA Moscow to victory and becoming the MVP for Round 5 of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Regular Season. De Colo had a double-double of 25 points and 10 assists while pacing his team to a 94-91 home win over Zalgiris Kaunas. Combined with his near-perfect shooting, 3 rebounds, 8 fouls drawn, a steal and safe ball-handling, De Colo amassed a performance index rating of 37, the highest of his 107-game EuroLeague career. What's more, his 11th MVP of the Round award allowed De Colo to surpass EuroLeague Legend Mirsad Turkcan, who had 10 in his career, for a new record. The same game in Moscow provided for second- and third-best performances of the week, as well. De Colo's teammate Will Clyburn accumulated an index rating of 34, second highest of the week and the best of his career. The CSKA forward tied his EuroLeague career best with 26 points to go with 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal and 8 fouls drawn. Behind him, with a career-high PIR of 28, was Zalgiris point guard Vasilije Micic, who matched his career best with 20 points. He also dished 7 assists, drew 5 fouls, and had 1 rebound and 1 steal. Nick Calathes of Panathinaikos Superfoods Athens and Taylor Rochestie of Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade rounded out the top performers of Round 5, both with PIRs of 24. In a dramatic 85-84 loss at Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz, Calathes scored 14 points and distributed a career-high 14 assists to go along with 3 rebounds and 5 drawn fouls. Rochestie scored 22 points for the third time this season and had 4 rebounds, 4 fouls drawn and 3 assists in Zvezda's home loss against Brose Bamberg.
Individual highs: Alex Tyus, 15 rebounds
Clyburn's 26 points on Friday were the most by any player in Round 5. Real Madrid’s teen phenom Luka Doncic remains the competition's top scorer with 21.6 points per game. Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv big man Alex Tyus had a career-high and a competition season-high 15 rebounds to lead all players this week. Tyus took the lead in that category for the season, too, improving his average to a league-high 8.2 boards per night. Nick Calathes also set a career high with 14 assists, which like Tyus, also set a new mark for this season. He, too, jumped atop of the rankings, now leading the competition with 7.2 assists per game. Ricky Hickman of Bamberg, Vincent Poirier of Baskonia and Facundo Campazzo of Madrid each stole 4 balls, the high total in Round 5. Charles Jenkins of Khimki Moscow Region leads the EuroLeague with 2 steals per game. Kyle Hines of CSKA had the most blocked shots this week, 3, while Gustavo Ayon of Madrid tops the season-long chart with 1.6 per night. Joining De Colo and Calathes with double-doubles this week were Tyus, who had 12 points to go with his 15 rebounds; Ayon, with 10 points and 10 rebounds; and Vladimir Stimac of Anadolu Efes Istanbul, with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
