Bertomeu: The Champions League winners in EuroLeague? Impossible and it doesn't make any sense

Bertomeu is ready to welcome back in EuroCup the Italian clubs

EuroLeague
Interviewed by Piero Guerrini of Tuttosport, EuroLeague CEO Jordi Bertomeu said that he is ready to welcome back in EuroCup Italian teams.
Reggio Emilia, Trento and Sassari got a three-year license during the summer but they were forced by the Italian Federation to withdraw from the competition. A fourth Italian team got a wild card to play in EuroCup, Cantù, but the club gave up as well.

“In Italy there was the fear to loss the organization of the Olympic Qualifying Tournament and Rome 2024. And we know what happened. The Italian clubs did not handle the pressure as it happened in other countries. And we had offered them also legal support. We would be still happy to have Italian teams in EuroCup. If LBA (Legabasket) comes back to us they will be welcomed” Bertomeu said.

Bertomeu also replied to FIBA’s proposal to accept in EuroLeague the winners of the Basketball Champions League.

“Impossible and it doesn’t make any sense. In which tournament when you win you jump up to categories?” Bertomeu added.

well French clubs are doing pretty well against the Spanish and Turkish clubs involved in the champions league... Strasbourg beat Tenerife (2nd of ACB) and ASVEL beat PAOK (4th of Greek league) #justsaying ;)

Tenerife and PAOK, really ? Good job my friend, these teams are the strongest candidates for this year's championship in their leagues :) Keep dreaming so that maybe French teams may have a spot in Euroleague with the help of a wildcard taken from Champions league. Under normal circumstances, they cannot have that spot...

Any champions from Spain, Turkey, Greece, Italy or VTB ? Any team from Spain or Turkey can beat French league champions easily. We are talking about premium champions...

Well said, a league without champions is not Champions League. FIBA is a big joke which does not make you even smile...

In addition you should look at how some of the Champions League teams are performing in the national league this year... Monaco, Tenerife, Banvit, PAOK, AEK, etc..
