Alba Berlin, another travel Odissey

La squadra tedesca ha impiegato due giorni per tornare in Germania

EuroCup

The Alba Berlin basketball team and its fans made headlines after last season’s Eurocup Finals for their lengthy return trip home to the German capital. Then the culprit was the eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland, whose ash clouds cancelled air travel throughout Europe and forced the team to venture by bus home from Vitoria, Spain. This week Alba has been the victim of heavy snow and problems with trains, planes and automobiles causing its return home after a Eurocup win over Pepsi Caserta to take two days. After spending the night in Caserta, Alba began its trip home on Wednesday morning when it took a private bus to the airport in nearby Naples, Italy. However after multiple delays, its flight to Berlin was cancelled and no new flight could be scheduled for at least two days. Amid the chaos, the team acted quickly and boarded a train to Munich, from where it was scheduled to continue home. After another delay in Munich, the train continued northward, but hit mechanical problems and came to halt in Nuremberg. A replacement train was needed to continue the journey, but snow drifts in the Thuringian Forest cancel that plan and force the team to spend the night in Nuremberg. Complicating matters for Alba and the hundreds of fellow passengers is a holiday festival in Nuremberg, which has hotels for kilometers booked full. Team manager Mithat Demirel manages to organize a bus to come from Bamberg – 60 kilometers away – to pick up the team and take it to Bamberg for a night’s sleep. Finally, at 1100 the next morning, the team boarded the bus in Bamberg to return back to Berlin and complete one of the longest travel ordeals in Eurocup history.
