Italian teams to compete in EuroCup again from next season

From next season, the Italian clubs will compete in EuroCup again.
There will be six Italian clubs in Europe next year.
One in EuroLeague, two in EuroCup and three in Basketball Champions League. Plus at least one more in FIBA Europe Cup if someone is interested.
Last summer four Italian teams (Reggio Emilia, Trento, Sassari and Cantù) were forced to withdraw from EuroCup because of the “war” between ECA and FIBA.
But from next season it will change everything.
As reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, Italian Basketball Federation president Gianni Petrucci already informed FIBA Secretary General Patrick Baumann that the Italian clubs will be free to join any European cup from 2017-2018 based on sports merit.
Lega Basket has to decide which cup between EuroCup and Basketball Champions League is more important and than, based on final ranking and sports merit, the teams will be joining the Cups.
If Lega Basket clubs decide that EuroCup is more important the two finalists will join the second ECA cup. Or the finalist plus the best semifinalist if Milano makes the Serie A Playoffs Finals. And the other will go to Basketball Champions League.
FIP will allow Italians teams to join EuroCup only if teams won’t have multi-year licenses (except Olimpia Milano which has a multi-year license to play in EuroLeague).
But the access will be established year-after-year based on sports merit.
