The Euroleague vs FIBA “war” involves the Italian referees too
Italian referees are not allowed to officiate in Eurocup. Carmelo Paternicò is likely to officiate his last game in Serie A on Sunday because he intends to referee an Eurocup game next week
Another chapter of the Euroleague vs FIBA’s “war” involves the Italian referees, as reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport.
The Italian Serie A referees have signed a contract with FIP on July in which they have accepted to officiate just competitions approved by FIBA and FIP.
Two weeks ago Carmelo Paternicò, Tolga Sahin and Saverio Lanzarini informed FIP that they were going to officiate some Eurocup games asking for permission.
FIP denied it and told them that if they want to referee in Eurocup they won’t be allowed anymore to officiate in Serie A (Italian referees were allowed to join the Euroleague officiating camp in Belgrade a few weeks ago).
FIP will break their contracts and seek compensation for damages.
Paternicò doesn’t intend to give up and is likely to officiate the Eurocup game next week while Lanzarini and Sahin for the moment won’t referee in Eurocup and Euroleague.
On Sunday in the derby between Milano and Varese Paternicò is likely to officiate his last game in Serie A (he refereed 600 games in Serie A and is an international referee since 2003).
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, that has reported the news, Lanzarini sent a letter to FIP but the Italian Federation never replied to him.
Euroleague’s move is to offer the referees under sanctions a three-year contract without age limit and go to the European Court.
