EuroCup
FIBA Europe Executive Director, Kamil Novak, who has sent the letters to 14 federations last week, spoke with Sport-FM in Greece about the war between Euroleague and FIBA.

DISPUTE WITH EUROLEAGUE: The Euroleague is essentially a company, ECA, based in Luxembourg with eleven club members. Apart from the agreement with the eleven teams Euroleague promised to some leagues a guaranteed spot in Eurocup for the third, fourth or fifth of the standings, in case the leagues agreed with the company.. This is problem. It is a trap for domestic leagues. The ECA offered three-year contracts to those clubs. Each club has goals, each owner wants to see his team to progress. When all spots are closed before the season, how can this happen? On 20 March the FIBA decided that with the exception of the 16 Euroleague teams, as many leagues or clubs would agree to Eurocup will face consequences. If the clubs are offered the chance to play in a cup regardless your performance in your domestic league, the clubs tend to accept the proposal. It may be good for certain teams but not sport. FIBA strongly believes that the fundamental principle of the European events is the participation of the teams bases on sports criteria. When sports criteria do not matter, then why do we have domestic competitions? What is their meaning?”.

LETTERS TO THE FEDERATIONS: We have sent eight letters to eight federations telling them their exclusion from the international competitions organized by FIBA Europe. They are leagues or federation that have agreed with Euroleague as a whole. Other six countries have to clarify their position by April 20.

OLYMPIC GAMES AND OLYMPIC QUALIFYING TOURNAMENTS: FIBA Europe will ask FIBA to extend our penalties to a global level with implications for the Olympic Games and Olympic Qualifying Tournaments. FIBA Board will meet at the end of the week and they will discuss FIBA Europe’s proposal and it is likely they will extend our sanctions worldwide.

REAL MOVE: It is a very serious issue. Believe me, it is a decision that was not taken easily and there was a serious debate in FIBA Europe before deciding that. Mothers sometimes must take difficult and painful decisions to protect their families. This is what we are doing now to protect basketball. FIBA Europe had to make this step based on the circumstances that had been created”

FIBA is a stepmom who does not care about the children. She is just after the money of the rich father.
