Union Olimpija sanctioned, fan banned for aggression in Ljulbjana

Euroleague Basketball's independent disciplinary judge has issued sanctions against Union Olimpija Ljubljana and its head coach following a courtside attack against the officiating crew of the team's last 2013-14 Eurocup home game, played in the Slovenian capital last week.
 
The aggression by a celebrity fan occurred shortly after the final buzzer of Union Olimpija's 83-87 home loss to Budivelnik Kiev, while the referees were walking off the court.
 
One week later, the judge has decided that Union Olimpija will play its next three home games in Eurocup behind closed doors, without fans, and also pay a fine of €25,000 for the aggression committed by the public against the officiating crew, under Article 28.1, paragraph (e) of the Euroleague Basketball Disciplinary Code.
 
In addition, the judge has sanctioned Union Olimpija head coach Ales Pipan with a fine of €3,000 for acts showing lack of respect towards the officiating crew under article 26.2, paragraph 1 (b) of the Code.
 
At the same time, in accordance with Article 99.5 of the Eurocup Regulations, the President and CEO of Euroleague Basketball, Jordi Bertomeu, has banned the fan, Zoran Predin, from attending any Euroleague Basketball games. Mr. Predin, a well-known entertainer in Slovenia, issued a press release hours after the incident apologizing for his actions and saying he would not attend basketball games in the future.
