Comninos: Positive balance for this first season, we want a better competition next year

The BCL CEO talked with the press about his impression for this first season, and the projects for the future

Champions League
Patrick Comninos, Basketball Champions League CEO, talked with the media about the impressions of this first season of the competition, with all the future projects to increase the level of the BCL. Here the key parts:

"It was a challengin year for us, created a competition to help the clubs, happy to receive positive comments. We had 8 national champions this year, and great teams in Final Four: 2nd in Italy, 1st in French, Turkish Cup winners and top 4 in Spain. We are convinced to make the good decision, to bring here in Tenerife the first BCL Final Four, great fans, organization and atmosphere".

"Now BCL has demostrated what can offer, everyone know about the possibilities of our competition and brand. Already at work for the new year. Federations pressures of this summer were not from FIBA, they decided for own interest, to protect domestic league and the teams".

"32 RS teams next season (24 directly), this year format it was an exception. Home-away playoff games it's the right choice for us. F4 will be confirmed. We will have the same approach next year chosing the venue from one of the 4 finalists, it's the right way for us. The Basketball Champions League winner next season wil receive a 1mln € payment".

"It's fundamental for us the sportly principle, because top brand are not necessarly the best team. For our ‘qualification coefficient’ we are looked to regular season, playoffs, to every game of the season".

"For now FIBA Europe Cup winner will not have a directly spot in the new BCL season. Euroleague spot for BCL champion? Should be on a discussion table for the future, there are possibilities, but it’s out of our control".
