The ABA League Second Division will start from the 2017/18 season
The ABA League Assembly, held on July 24, 2017 in Belgrade, has made a series of important decisions which will have strong impact on the development of basketball in our region.
Taking into concern a strong interest of the clubs and the need of further development of basketball in our region, the ABA League Assembly has decided to start the ABA League Second Division from the 2017/18 season, in which there will be 12 participants. Based on the results in the national championships and by taking into account which clubs have sent applications for participation in the ABA League Second Division, these teams will play in the 2017/18 ABA League Second Division: Krka, Rogaška, Split, Bosna, Zrinjski, Dynamic, Borac Čačak, Teodo, Lovćen and Ohrid.
The last two participants will be determined after two qualification tournaments.
The first qualification tournament will be organized only for the teams from Bosnia and Herzegovina and there will be 3 participants - Mladost Mrkonjić Grad, Široki Brijeg and Sloboda Tuzla. The winner of this qualification tournament will qualify for the second qualification tournament, where it will join Primorska, Vršac and Sutjeska.
The second and the final qualification tournament will be held in Laktaši, on September 27-29. With four participants (Primorska, Vršac, Sutjeska and the winner of the first qualification tournament for BiH clubs) and a single round-robin format (everyone will play against everyone), the two best placed teams at the end of the tournament will qualify for the 2017/18 ABA League Second Division.
In accordance to the decision that the ABA League Second Division will start from the 2017/18 season, the ABA League Assembly has decided to change the league Propositions for the 2017/18 ABA League First Division, which means that the winner of the 2017/18 ABA League Second Division will advance to the ABA League First Division for the 2018/19 season. Also, in accordance to the latest change in the league Propositions, the maximum number of clubs from one country in the ABA League First Division is now limited to five.
With a desire to strengthen its position as the main power for development of basketball in our region, the ABA League Assembly has decided to organize tournaments for junior teams in the 2017/18 season.
The ABA League Assembly has also decided to organize the ABA League Supercup in Bar, which will take place from September 20 to September 23. Based on the results in the 2016/17 ABA League season there will be 8 participants: Cedevita, Partizan NIS, Budućnost VOLI, Igokea, Mega Bemax, Cibona, Mornar and FMP. Crvena zvezda mts had to cancel their participation at the 2017 ABA League Supercup, due to their previously scheduled Euroleague tournament, which will be held in the same period.
In accordance with successful business and with the aim to additionally help its clubs, the ABA League Assembly has decided to bear all the costs of team transportations during the 2017/18 season. Also, the ABA League Assembly has decided to pay 12.000 Euros to each of the 2016/17 ABA League participants for their transportation costs during the 2016/17 season. If the clubs have some unpaid fines, the league hold the right to collect the fine from the amount of money which will each club receive for transportation costs.
