NBA trade deadline is February 20, but not all the players can be traded

NBA

The NBA trade deadline is February 20, 2014 but not all the players can be traded.

HoopsWorld reported a list of players that cannot be traded this season or they have limitations.

Under certain rules, if a player re-signed with his team this past summer while receiving a raise of at least 20 percent — and the team is over the cap — the player cannot be traded until January 15, 2014.

Eight players meet that criteria:

Tony Allen — Memphis Grizzlies
Chase Budinger — Minnesota Timberwolves
Cartier Martin — Atlanta Hawks
Timofey Mozgov — Denver Nuggets
Nikola Pekovic — Minnesota Timberwolves
J.R. Smith — New York Knicks
Tiago Splitter — San Antonio Spurs
Brandan Wright — Dallas Mavericks

Additionally, free agents signed during the season cannot be traded for three months.

Diante Garrett of the Utah Jazz cannot be traded until February 13, 2014.

The Philadelphia 76ers have four players with date limitations:  Daniel Orton (January 15, 2014), Brandon Davies (January 27, 2014), Elliot Williams (February 20, 2014) and Lorenzo Brown (February 20, 2014).

The following players cannot be dealt at all this season:

Alexis Ajinca — New Orleans Pelicans
D.J. Augustin — Chicago Bulls
Andrew Bogut — Golden State Warriors
Kobe Bryant — Los Angeles Lakers
Seth Curry — Memphis Grizzlies
Chris Douglas-Roberts — Charlotte Bobcats
Stephen Jackson — Los Angeles Clippers
James Johnson — Memphis Grizzlies
Kendall Marshall — Los Angeles Lakers
Malcolm Thomas — San Antonio Spurs

Additionally, players signed to a one-year deal who will have Bird or Early Bird Rights next summer can also block trades this season — call it an implicit no-trade clause.

One Year Bird” players include:

Chris Andersen — Miami HEAT
Andray Blatche — Brooklyn Nets
Aaron Brooks — Houston Rockets
Derek Fisher — Oklahoma City Thunder
Francisco Garcia — Houston Rockets
Bernard James — Dallas Mavericks
Kenyon Martin — New York Knicks
Josh McRoberts — Charlotte Bobcats
Nazr Mohammed — Chicago Bulls
Hamady Ndiaye — Sacramento Kings
Jannero Pargo — Charlotte Bobcats
Garrett Temple — Washington Wizards

Jeff Teague (Hawks) can be traded, but has an implicit no-trade clause until July 13, 2014.  Because he signed an offer sheet with the Milwaukee Bucks, the Hawks cannot deal him to Milwaukee until July 13.

Recently traded players can be traded again, but if their existing team is over the cap, they cannot be packaged out with other players for two months.

Trades have been scant thus far this season.  Luc Richard Mbah a Moute (Minnesota Timberwolves) and Derrick Williams (Sacramento Kings) cannot be packaged out by their respective teams until January 26, 2014.

The seven players in the Sacramento Kings/Toronto Raptors deal cannot be packaged back out until February 9, 2014 — including Sacramento’s Rudy Gay, Aaron Gray and Quincy Acy, and Toronto’s John Salmons, Chuck Hayes, Patrick Patterson and Greivis Vasquez.

Finally, a few players possess true no-trade clauses:  Dirk Nowitzki (Dallas Mavericks), Kobe Bryant (Los Angeles Lakers) and Tim Duncan (San Antonio Spurs).
