USA claim fourth FIBA U17 World Championship title

The United States beat Turkey 96-56 in Sunday's Final to win the 2016 FIBA U17 World Championship.  

 

USA captain Gary Trent Jr. scored 17 points, Collin Sexton collected 16 points and 8 assists and Wendell Carter Jr. chipped in with 11 points and 8 rebounds. Turkey were paced by Ragip Berke Atar with 13 points while Eray Akyuz had a dozen for the U17 Worlds debutants, who were the first European team to reach the final since Poland in 2010.

 

The result means the USA have won all four editions of the biennial tournament to date.

 

Lithuania claimed 3rd Place after seeing off tournament hosts Spain 81-63 for their first-ever podium finish in the competition’s history. Arnas Velicka collected 18 points, 8 assists, 6 rebounds and 3 steals to lead the way.

 

Sexton was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, presented by Tissot and headed headed the All-Star Five where he was joined by his USA teammate Carter Jr., Lithuania's Velicka, Bosnia and Herzegovina guard Dzanan Musa and Spain forward Sergi Martinez.

 

In Sunday's Classification Games 5-8, Canada cruised past France 99-68 to take 5th place while Australia edged out Korea 83-76 for 7th. In Saturday's Classification 9-16 clashes, Bosnia and Herzegovina edged out China 88-84 to finish 9th, the Dominican Republic got the better of Finland 65-56 for 11th, Argentina claimed 13th place with a 67-64 defeat of Chinese Taipi while Mali hammered Egypt 61-38 to come in 15th.
