EuroLeague

At the start of a new phase that challenges everyone to raise their game, FC Barcelona Regal center Ante Tomic did that and more with a near-perfect all-around performance to earn the bwin MVP honor for Week 1 of the Top 16! Tomic packed as many stats as possible into less than 21 minutes on the floor as Barcelona defeated Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul 100-78 on Friday for the highest Top 16 point total in almost two years. In a game that Barcelona never trailed, Tomic started strong and finished with the only double-double of the Top 16's first week: 12 points on 5-for-6 two-point shooting and 11 rebounds, including his career high of 10 on defense. He also added a career-high 5 assists and 3 blocked shots for a performance index rating of 27, the best by a player on a winning team this week. Tomic was co-MVP of the Week in the seventh week of the regular season, but this marks the first time he wins the award exclusively in his fourth Euroleague season. Tying Tomic with a 27 index rating in a losing cause was Anton Gavel of Brose Baskets Bamberg, whose 15 points, 8 assists and 2 steals couldn't prevent an 85-82 road loss the Unicaja Malaga. Three players from the same game, in which CSKA Moscow topped visiting Anadolu Efes Pilsen 90-71, came next among the week's best performances. Nenad Krstic had a 25 index rating for the winners behind 22 points on 8-for-9 two-point shooting, while Efes guard Jordan Farmar poured in 24 points and dished 6 assists. Krstic's CSKA teammate Sonny Weems also scored 22 points, including 4 of 5 three-point shots, on his way to a 24 index rating, the same as Tomas Ress of Montepaschi Siena, who tallied 18 points, 5 rebounds and 3 blocks as his team beat Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv 79-69.

Individual highs: Maciej Lampe, 25 points

Lampe was the week’s top scorer with 25 points in Caja Laboral’s victory. He improved his season average to 12.5 points per game. Bobby Brown on Montepaschi Siena remains the season-long leader with 19.2 points per game. Tomic was the week’s top rebounder with 11 boards in the Barcelona victory, improving his average to 5.7 per game. The leading rebounder among active Top 16 players is Viktor Khryapa with 6.4 per game. No one accounted for more assists than BC Khimki Moscow Region’s Zoran Planinic, who dished 9 in his team’s road win. Planinic is third in the league with 5.7 assists per game, just behind Brown (5.8 apg.). Planinic’s backcourt mate Vitaly Fridzon swiped 5 steals to lead the Top 16, Game 1 standings. Ibby Jaaber of Zalgiris is the Euroleague’s new steals leader with 2.10 per game – a fraction more than Ricky Hickman (2.09 spg.) of Maccabi. Tomic and Ress, each with 3 blocked shots, were the best of the week. Stephane Lasme of Panathinaikos remains the Euroleague’s rejections leader with an average of 2.3 per game. Tomic was also the only player to record a double-double this week.
