Zeljko Obradovic: 'The future is a closed Euroleague'

Secondo il coach la soluzione è una Euroleague chiusa in cui le migliori squadre entrino solo ai playoff nei loro campionato nazionali

Zeljko Obradovic talked about the future of the Euroleague in a long interview to Gigantes del Baket. He proposed a closed Euroleague where the best team can play against each several times during the season. And they would play the domestic competition just for the playoffs. Translation via BBallheadlines.

“G: Where is European basketball heading?

O: Towards a closed Euroleague. I can’t see any other solution. Our basketball, as evident by the Spanish NT, gets closer to the NBA daily and in order to fortify it the only option is to have a strong Euroleague, in which the strongest teams play a lot of games against each other. We will have a nice showcase of what I am saying in this season’s Top 16. In addition, I can assure you that if we don’t go that way, one day the NBA is going to come and establish a European Division in Europe and this will be the death of European basketball as we know it. It is better that we ourselves will be capable to organize and see through such a project.
G: And what happens to the domestic competitions?
O: They will be played without the teams that participated in the Euroleague, which in turn can join the domestic competition in the playoffs in May and June.”
