Top 16, Round 5 bwin MVP: Ante Tomic, FC Barcelona

The Barcelona big man is the top player of the week

He has dominated in the Top 16 before and FC Barcelona center Ante Tomic did so again in Round 5 with a near-perfect performance that has earned him the bwin MVP of the week distinction. Tomic led his team in six different statistical categories during Barcelona's tipoff-to-buzzer 89-72 victory over visiting Zalgiris Kaunas in Group E on Friday. In almost 25 mostly flawless minutes, he scored 16 points by making 6 of 7 two-point shots and all 4 of his free throws. Tomic also had 9 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 blocks while drawing 5 fouls, adding to a performance index rating of 34 that was the best on a winning team this week. The highest index rating of the week came from Real Madrid’s Felipe Reyes, who also made history by becoming the Euroleague’s career rebounder leader. Reyes posted 20 points, 11 rebounds and 3 assists for a performance index rating of 35 in his team’s 90-86 loss at defending champion Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv. Crvena Zvezda Telekom Belgrade center Boban Marjanovic and Nizhny Novgorod playmaker Taylor Rochestie are next in the list of Top 16 Round 5 standouts as each finished with index ratings of 28. Marjanovic posted his eighth double-double of the season in an 86-69 victory over ALBA Berlin. Marjanovic scored 17 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and drew 8 fouls. Rochestie amassed 22 points, 9 assists and 3 steals in a 103-95 overtime loss at CSKA Moscow. Rounding out the week’s top five was Nizhny center Art Parakhouski, who posted 18 points, 8 boards and 2 blocks.

 

 

Individual leaders: Marcus Williams, 10 assists

CSKA Moscow maestro Milos Teodosic recorded the highest scoring output of Top 16 Round 5 with 25 points. With 15.8 points per game, Teodosic is now in the Top 16’s top 10. The phase’s leading scorer Rochestie with 18.8 points per game. Rochestie is also the top scorer for the 2014-15 season with 19.5 points per game. Fenerbahce Ulker forward Nemanja Bjelica’s 13 rebounds were the most this week. Bjelica also has the top 16's best rebounding average, 9.8 per game. Marjanovic sits atop the season-long rebounding charts with an average of 9.9 rebounds per game – more than 2 rebounds per game better than the next player! Marcus Williams of Crvena Zvezda dished 10 assists Thursday, which were the most all week. Maccabi Electra guard Jeremy Pargo remains the Top 16’s No. 1 assist man with 7.8 per game. Unicaja guard Jayson Granger and Barcelona swingman Mario Hezonja were the best ball thieves this week with 4 steals apiece. Madrid’s Rudy Fernandez is the Top 16 leader with 2.2 steals per game. The week’s blocked shots crown goes to James Gist of Panathinaikos with 4. Parakhouski remains the Top 16’s leader in blocks with an average of 2.6 per game. He is also the full-season leader with 2 blocks per game. Five players amassed double doubles this week. They were Nemanja Bjelica (14 points, 13 rebounds), Antonis Fotsis (12 points, 11 rebounds) of Panathinaikos, Tarence Kinsey of Nizhny (19 points, 10 rebounds), Marjanovic and Reyes.
