Crvena Zvezda's Williams breaks Euroleague assists record
Williams dished 17 assists
For the second week in a row, a Turkish Airlines Euroleague individual record has fallen as Marcus Williams of Crvena Zvezda Telekom Belgrade delivered 17 assists to his teammates on Friday, the most in any single game of the competition this century.
His total eclipsed by two the 15 assists that John Linehan handed out for SLUC Nancy in a regular season loss on November 3, 2011. Williams dished the record-breaker to Nikola Kalinic on a layup with 1:06 left in the first overtime to put their team ahead, 91-94.
However, host Galatasaray Liv Hospital Istanbul forced a second overtime and won at the end of it, 110-103. His record followed a new Euroleague mark of 10 three-pointers made that Andrew Goudelock of Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul set just a week ago. Williams is in his third Euroleague season and his first with Zvezda.
His previous best game in assists came on November 11 of last year, when he played for Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar and distributed 9 against Laboral Kutxa Vitoria.
The new assists record came during a game of novelties. It was the first double-overtime game in the Euroleague in more than two years, while Galatasaray and Zvezda's 213 points combined were 10th most in the competition this century. Williams's teammate on Zvezda, Bojan Marjanovic, pulled 17 rebounds, the most in the Euroleague this season
